Lily just loves pelicans. She has been commissioned to make two more figures for a public garden with children in mind, but it's not only kids who love them.

"From the first time I saw pelicans on a trip up the Pacific Coast highway in California, I have loved them for their ancient, knowing and wacky nature. They seem full of stories, and I remember one pelican in particular on Canary Row, in Monterey ( full of ghosts of John Steinbeck . . . .), It stood alone on a jetty post, looking hungover and definitely the worst for wear, all sea salt and feathers. But this "old man of the sea", with its strange prehistoric form, looked to me as though, in some wry, humorous way, it was quietly humming the "sailor's hornpipe"." Lily Sawtell
